The drama starts from Zhao Mosheng and He Yichen’s first encounter in Shanghai and slowly opens up to their background story and their past history. This summary will do the opposite, starting from their very beginning in college and chronologically tell the story of this bitter and then sweet love story.
True love is not measured by time, but rather by patience, willingness, and forgiveness. This is the story of a modern fairytale, both sad and happy, both bitter and sweet. He Yichen (Wallace Chung) and Zhao Mosheng (Tiffany Tang) were college sweethearts. Flash forward to present day, in between them are seven years and on top of that misunderstandings they have not come to terms with. Through the 32 episodes, we begin to see them reevaluate each other and recall the sweet memories they once had.
Their First EncounterZhao Mosheng was a first year chemistry student with an interest for photography. On the first day of orientation, she sees He Yichen sitting beside a tree reading a book. She is attracted to his aura, his looks, and his personality. Mosheng starts to follow him, doing little things to obtain his attention. This includes joining the debate team, stalking him at lunch and in the study hall, and walking closely behind him at times. Yichen, being a second year international law student has something to brag about too. He is named ‘most popular male student of the law major’. There is literally a whole line of females chasing after him. However, as fate would put it, Yichen “declares” Mosheng as his girlfriend by spreading rumors that he is taken. He says why not if they are to date three years later anyways. Although he said he was not going to date in college, he gave in to Mosheng’s persistence. When together, the two also changed one another, for the better. Yichen, originally a cool, calm, and logic person becomes the total opposite after encountering Mosheng. And Mosheng, with her bubbly personality who is usually noisy, not very willing to study, and kinetic becomes quieter, willing to study and learn, and more dynamic after encountering Yichen.
Hidden SecretsHowever, both of them have hidden secrets from each other. Yichen and Mosheng are actually from the same hometown. Yichen’s father died in a construction accident and his mother died shortly of grief when he was 10. Seeing him in the situation, his neighbors adopted him and took him in as a son. However, their daughter, He Yimei (Joyce Jian) saw him more than just a brother. Mosheng comes from an upper class family, although she is a down-to-earth young lady who does not brag about her wealth. Her father and mother has always been on bad terms since she was young. Because of this unhealthy relationship, her mother treats Mosheng coldly and her father is the only one in the family that cares about her. During winter break, they both go back home and Mosheng sees Yimei for the first time. Already jealous, Yimei questions Yichen with Yichen lying she keeps pestering him. Mosheng’s father knows something is up when he sees her daughter happily smiling at times but then annoyed at other times as Yichen was unwilling to give his phone number to her.
MisunderstandingsWith school back in session, Yimei attends a school nearby. Mosheng treats her like as a good friend, but it is obvious that Yimei does not treat her the same way. On one occasion, Yimei challenges Mosheng to compete for Yichen. On the same day, Mosheng’s father asks to see Yichen privately, willing to sponsor his fees to study abroad with Mosheng. Yichen is angry because he had speculated that Mosheng’s father had indirectly caused the death of his own father. Yichen angrily rejects him and walks away. When Yichen sees Mosheng, he tells her he does not want to ever see her again. Mosheng’s father stumbles upon a case of corruption and has no choice but to send her off to the U.S. so she does not become involved. Mosheng’s father had tricked her into vacationing for a few days, but upon arrival, her father’s friend takes away her passport. She also finds out that her father has been jailed. Even though her father had deposited a lump sum of money into the bank account, she decides to donate this money to charity instead of using it.
Acceptance in a Foreign CountryWith no methods to return home, Mosheng takes her photography courses at New York. One time, she develops a fever and becomes so weak she thought she would die. Thankfully her next door neighbor Juan Jie (Wang Xiao Ling) sends her to the hospital. She becomes friends with the neighbor, being that they speak the same language and Mosheng tries to protect her and her son from her abusive husband. After she recovers, she sees an advertisement on the local newspaper, a student asking to borrow $500 to meet ends. She sees the student attends the university where she had met Yichen. Even if it means Mosheng must save up, she mails $500 to the student. When Juan Jie accidentally kills her abusive husband while trying to protect herself, she is sentenced to time in jail. Mosheng helps Juan Jie look after her son while she serves her sentence. At first her son goes to a foster care home, being bullied by other children there. Mosheng remembers Juan Jie had saved her life before and decides to take care of him. She knows it might be difficult because she is a single woman. With great financial problems ahead, she writes back to the student whom she had lent $500, and asks if he can return the money.
Life’s EncountersLittle did she know that student Ying Hui (Kevin Tan) started INSO, a successful technology company. He is making loads of money in the market. They meet up and Mosheng brings along Juan Jie’s son. Mosheng tells him she wants to adopt him but also knows the process will not be an easy one. Ying Hui proposes that they fake a marriage. That way it would be easier to adopt a child. Mosheng is troubled to make a decision, still thinking of Yichen in her mind. At the end, she gives in. Ying Hui does not mind flying to New York from California every month to be present for the home visit by social workers because he has found himself starting to like Mosheng and her kindness. After Juan Jie serves her time in jail, she decides to bring her son back to China to be with her family. The American Dream she lived was not what she had imagined. Mosheng thought this would be the end of her “marriage” as well as the start of a new chapter. However, Ying Hui asks if she could move to California, for one, he can look after her and two, his parents found out about this marriage and would like to see their new daughter-in-law. Acting almost like a housewife, Mosheng took care of their home and took responsibility as his companion to business parties. One night, coming home drunk, Ying Hui tries to force Mosheng into the bed. Not wanting to make things any more awkward between them, Mosheng realizes she should go back to Shanghai for the first time in seven years.
Return to ShanghaiUpon her return, she is hired as a photographer in a magazine company. She meets Gu Xing Hong (Zang Hong Na), her new friend with a bubbly and nosy personality. She also becomes friends with fellow photographer Lu Yuanfeng (Yang Le). On their first photo shoot session, Mosheng reencounters Xiao Xiao (Viola Mi), one of her roommates from her college days. Xiao Xiao is now a supermodel, no longer known as the girl from the village. Without properly having said farewell to her, Xiao Xiao had been led to believe Mosheng asked to breakup with Yichen, causing much speculation within their university. Xiao Xiao’s lawyer representative is no person other than He Yichen. During the photoshoot, she purposely throws a tantrum, giving an opportunity for Yichen and Mosheng to meet up.
Awkward EncounterBut actually, Mosheng thought Yimei and Yichen became a couple, seeing them shop together at a supermarket shortly after returning to Shanghai. And ever since that encounter, Yichen could not stop thinking about her. He purposely makes her wait at a coffee shop for hours to discuss Xiao Xiao’s case, which of course, she does not know he is the lawyer. Yichen drops his wallet in the same supermarket, with nothing inside except for some money and a picture of Mosheng during her college years, on the back written “My Sunshine”. Mosheng returns the wallet back to the receptionist, not waiting to see Yichen. But, she had taken out the picture, prompting Yichen to meet with her in person, for the first time in seven years. He requests that she give him back the photograph. He requests to meet with Mosheng to further work on Xiao Xiao’s case, asking questions of her credentials, but in reality, wanting to know the life she had in the US.
SuspicionSeeing him like never before, Yichen’s coworkers suspect something has occurred in his life. And indeed, the person who had made such a large impact to his life has returned. Xiao Xiao invites Yichen, Mosheng, and Yuanfeng to dinner to thank them for helping her take legal action against a photoshopped image ruining her reputation. Yichen is obviously jealous when he hears Mosheng would be bringing Yuanfeng, a fellow coworker. Yichen’s jealousy increases when he accidentally bumps into Mosheng and Xing Hong at a double date. A drunk Yichen waits for her and jumps out from the alley, forcefully kissing her on the wall. The next day, they take a trip down memory lane as they take a trip back to their university.
Sparks ReigniteYichen immediately rushes to the hospital upon hearing that people in the magazine company were injured by possible triad members. He is relieved to see Mosheng uninjured. He initiates to hold her hand. Yimei walks in to see this scene, to be comforted by Yuanfeng. Yichen wastes no time to propose they start again, for he does not want to use more time to evaluate and get to know another girl. At this time, Mosheng finally tells him she had married while in the US, not telling him the notion behind the marriage.
True Love RediscoveredDue to his unhealthy eating habits, Yichen has internal bleeding in his stomach. Yichen’s friend and law partner Xiang Heng (Zhao Cun Lun) notifies Mosheng. When she gets to the hospital, she sees Yimei, who brings her to his apartment. There, she sees the simplicity and dullness of his everyday life. When she returns to the hospital, she unknowingly kisses him and runs away. From that point on, Yichen focuses on recovering his health and forgetting about Mosheng. One night, Mosheng shows up at his door, ready explain to the marriage and divorce. Yichen disagrees to reconcile. But, it is obvious that both of them have not forgotten about each other.
Life as NewlywedsThe next morning, Yichen asks Mosheng to bring all documents required to register for marriage. Mosheng is shocked, but does as told. During registration, even the officer is curious to why Yichen does not have a happy face on. Right after the registration, Yichen hands the apartment keys to Mosheng as he heads to Guangzhou for a business trip. Mosheng uses this opportunity to add more lively elements to his apartment. Yichen continues to treat her coldly upon his return. But, Mosheng accepts this, hoping things will gradually work out between them. Mosheng knows Yimei’s parents are in town to visit and books a table to eat with them, but Yichen does not bring her, worrying her if he regrets the marriage.
Marriage RevealedWithout warning, Yichen brings his coworkers home to celebrate after they successfully sign with a large company. Unexpectedly, they see Mosheng there and realize they have married. Mosheng is confused with their relationship. Although they are married, she feels they are more like a dating couple. At the university homecoming, Mosheng is shocked to see Ying Hui to be the guest speaker. A successful business who owns INSO, he is a motivation to all the younger students. At dinner, a friend of Ying Hui calls out Mosheng, causing much awkwardness. Ying Hui comes over to say he has got the wrong person. Although Yichen seems as if he does not care, he does not want to know the story, despite Mosheng trying to tell him on multiple occasions.
Ex-Husband’s ReturnWhen Mosheng’s magazine company requests to do an interview with Ying Hui, he agrees, under the condition that Mosheng would be photographer. At the same time, he challenges Yichen when he refuses to do business with INSO, Ying Hui’s company. When Mosheng packs to go to Hong Kong for a few days to interview a fashion icon, Yichen gets furious and throws himself onto her, thinking she is leaving him again. He later realizes she packed last minute because she forgot about the trip.
Ex-Husband and Current HusbandWhile in Hong Kong, the fashion icon turns out to be a friend of Ying Hui, who is also present at a party as well. The guests refer to Mosheng as Mrs. Ying, making her unhappy. She calls Yichen to notify him, for which he hops on the next plane and gives Mosheng a surprise. The dinner for three is an awkward one, with Mosheng and Yichen sharing their inside secrets and Ying Hui not knowing what to say. Yichen and Mosheng take the opportunity to explore Hong Kong, visiting tourist attractions and doing some shopping. On the flight back to Shanghai, Ying Hui and Yichen sit in business class, exchanging a few words.
Arising ProblemsBack in Shanghai, Mosheng’s coworkers are shocked to know she is the wife of He Yichen, one of the potential people they had wanted to interview. Ying Hui invites Yichen to see a gallery he set up with some of Mosheng’s photographs, but Yichen shows he does not care, angering Ying Hui. Yichen starts to sense something is wrong with the divorce of Ying Hui and Mosheng, although he had not asked Mosheng how it all happened.
HoneymoonHe gives a surprise to Mosheng and they go off to the Mauritius for their “honeymoon”. At the same time, Yimei interviews Ying Hui and he purposely tells her his wife is Mosheng. On honeymoon, Mosheng is free of stress and troubles, but Yichen knows her divorce was never finalized and thus considered as married twice at the same time.
Secrets UnveiledBack in Shanghai, Yimei is disappointed to know that Yichen chose a divorced woman over her, and she breaks up with Yuanfeng. Yuanfeng seeks comfort from Xiao Xiao, wanting to know who Yimei’s crush is, only to end up in bed with her, after a long night of drinking. Ying Hui invites Mosheng to view the gallery he opened with her photography works, and also tells her their divorce was never finalized, and he would like to start over with her in the US. Mosheng tells Yichen, only to know he had already found out a few days ago. To show his trust, Yichen brings her to a church and officially proposes and puts a ring on her. Mosheng is finally able to tell Yichen everything and all she experienced the last seven years in the US. Yichen informs Ying Hui he will find evidence that the divorce papers were illegal documents produced by him.

Although Yimei shows jealously towards Mosheng, the smart Yichen indirectly tells her they are and can only be siblings. Mosheng also pays a visit to her mother, who is surprised to see she is married and to Yichen too, with her knowing some part of the backstory of his family. This was my first time watching a Mainland China drama, and I remember I was completely hooked! I caught up with the episodes quickly as two episodes aired a day. The love story between He Yichen (Wallace Chung) and Zhao Mosheng (Tiffany Tang) was marked by time, patience, and change. It is a fairytale in a way, and many fans were overwhelmed by this drama, how chemistry sparked between them. Although the plot revolved around their love story, the side characters gave life to the overall picture.
