Once a year, here they are again! The TVB 48th Anniversary Awards will be held on December 13, 2015.
Below are my predictions. (Note: I watched less than half the aired series this year…)
Who Should Win: Kevin Cheng (Eye in the Sky)/Ruco Chan (Captain of Destiny)
Who I Think Will Win: Ruco Chan (Captain of Destiny)
-Ruco Chan delivered an exceptional performance in Captain of Destiny as the 11th Prince. His anger, his emotions, his body language all added to the equation. It is not a question how he has taken on main roles step by step from side characters. Another actor who should be praised is two-time Best Actor recipient Kevin Cheng in Eye in the Sky, which coincidentally he co-stared with Ruco Chan. But, Ruco might take home the award this time, for he already won in the Starhub and Astro award ceremonies.
Who Should Win: Linda Chung (Limelight Years)
Who I Think Will Win: Nancy Wu (Ghost of Relativity)
-Honestly speaking, Ghost of Relativity had a poor storyline. The high ratings are due to the cast and their acting. Nancy and Kristal had the chemistry, whether it was speaking or body movements. However, Linda Chung’s portrayal of a typical sassy Hong Kong female also won praises in Limelight Years. Will Nancy continue her streak from previous award ceremonies in Singapore and Malaysia? Or will it be Linda’s time to shine, her 11th year in the entertainment industry?
Most Popular Male Character
Who Should Win: Tony Hung (Captain of Destiny)
Who I Think Will Win: Vincent Wong (Brick Slaves)
-Tony Hung’s character in Captain of Destiny as Cheung Bo Zai was playful and convincing, but Vincent Wong’s character in Brick Slaves once again was a dorky and nerdy character, two traits he has perfected from the Coffee Cat Mama days.
Most Popular Female Character
Who Should Win: Linda Chung (Limelight Years)
Who I Think Will Win: Linda Chung (Limelight Years)
-No one can forget Linda Chung’s Szeto Dik Dik in Limelight Years, the one who turned from sassy and materialistic to being independent. This might have been another breakthrough role for Linda, and perhaps her hard work might pay off for this one.
Best Supporting Actor
Who Should Win: Timmy Hung (The Fixer)
Who I Think Will Win: Joel Chan (Captain of Destiny)
-It is hard to name a role that Timmy Hung has impressed the audience with, but his role in The Fixer has definitely achieved that. However, reading recent articles, Joel Chan has an equal chance with his character portrayal in Captain of Destiny (not up to the episode where he appears yet) as well. This might just be Joel’s breakthrough year.
Best Supporting Actress
Who Should Win: Tracy Chu (The Fixer)
Who I Think Will Win: Elaine Yiu (Captain of Destiny)
-Tracy Chu is also nominated for Most Improved, but her role in The Fixer was bold, daring, and memorable. As a newbie, the audience can witness how her acting has improved as she took on different roles. Elaine Yiu has been in TVB for a number of years, never playing a role that stood out to the audience, but the scheming role of Consort Yim in Captain of Destiny is persuasive.
Most Improved Male Artist
Who Should Win: Tony Hung
Who I Think Will Win: Tony Hung
-I did not watch Momentary Lapse of Reason, but reading entertainment news articles, Matt Yeung was praised and recently won an award at the Malaysia Astro Awards earlier. However, with Eye in the Sky and Captain of Destiny under his belt, as well as previous hosting experience, Tony Hung deserves to take home this one. Benjamin Yuen is on the list as well, but his roles this year were just not that impressive.
Most Improved Female Artist
Who Should Win: Grace Chan
Who I Think Will Win: Grace Chan
-This is Grace Chan’s second year since her pageant win and her popularity has only increased. It is rare for pageant winners to immediately start of as female lead, but Grace Chan already has Captain of Destiny by her side. With her sweet smile, she only has to polish some of her acting skills and decrease the pitch of her screams. Winning Most Improved will give her a chance to look back to see what she needs to work on.
Best Theme Song
Who Should Win: 揚帆 Sail by Fred Cheng (Theme for Captain of Destiny)/ 一顆不變的心 A Heart That Will Not Change by Linda Chung (Subtheme for Captain of Destiny)
Who I Think Will Win: 揚帆 Sail by Fred Cheng (Theme for Captain of Destiny)
-This year, these four sang most of the theme and subtheme songs: Jinny Ng, Fred Cheng, Linda Chung, and Alfred Hui. Linda’s song has the feels for Cheung Bo Zai and Wong Tai Mui in Captain of Destiny. Fred Cheng’s song for Captain of Destiny is strong, yet matches with the series. Hands down, this just could be the song of the year. And since, Captain of Destiny was an anniversary series, it is still fresh in everyone’s mind, including the song.
Who Should Win: Dodo Goes Shopping
Who I Think Will Win: Four Amigos Bon Voyage
-I’m not much of a variety show person and only on rare occasions do I actually watch an episode of variety show. Therefore, I am choosing based on the ones I have heard of and skimmed through.
Best Drama Serial
Who Should Win: Captain of Destiny
Who I Think Will Win: Captain Destiny
–Captain of Destiny (which I am currently watching at the moment) uses heavy computer graphics. With such an investment in time, money, and effort, it does deserve to win best drama. Although the costumes and historical accuracy have been criticized, it will certainly not be surprising if this drama wins.
Most Popular Classic Drama Serial
Who Should Win: War of the Genders
Who I Think Will Win: War of the Genders
–I have no idea whatsoever how the dramas were decided and nominated for this category. Is it from popularity or from public vote? I do know that this will be 100% based on public vote. So let me take a wild lucky guess here since I only remember watching three of eight on the list (the most recent ones). I’ll choose War of the Genders, since I know Dayo Wong and Dodo Cheng generated a lot of views in that sitcom.
Best Variety Show or Special Program
Who Should Win: Sze You Tonight
Who I Think Will Win: Dodo Goes Shopping
–Sze You Tonight started off quite well, in my opinion. Resembling an American talk show, Johnson Lee cracked invited different guests weekly to play some games and crack some jokes while Pal Sinn played his music. It garnered a lot of attention, but DoDo Goes Shopping definitely got more of my attention. Although I only watched the first five episodes, that was good enough to see Dodo explore the luxury of shopping, eating, and enjoying while traveling.
Best Informative Program
Who Should Win: Not Far But Away
Who I Think Will Win: Sidewalk Scientist
–I watched none of the nominated informative programs on the list, so let once again, a lucky guess. I’m currently in a Tony Hung phase, so I will be rooting for him in Not Far But Away, but the girls in Sidewalk Scientist have all soared in popularity…
