The shorter story was I read something on the magazine about Ekin Cheng and Jordan Chan competing in the Amazing Race together. And thus, I started my journey with these eight teams, as they competed challenge after challenge to win the competition. The Amazing Race: China Edition is sponsored by Infinity and produced by Shenzhen TV.
Wallace is an actor and his sister Jackie is a firefighter. In the conclusion of the show, Jackie admitted that in the 20 weeks, they interacted with each other more than they have in the past 20 years added together. She felt as if she found her brother and friend again. They were the first team to U-turn a group and awkwardly, just as they put their picture up in the U-turn sign, the other team walked in and questioned why. They were a very competitive pair. In the beginning, Wallace always pushed Jackie to do the harder tasks and would always ask where Jackie is, which later became an inside joke within the show. Jackie also felt at the beginning that she would have to look after him, because she was the more energetic one. But it soon proved that the siblings cared for one another and they even won the entire race.
Li Xiaopeng, the a former Chinese gymnast who holds the most medals in Chinese history participated with his wife. It was heartwarming to see how they motivated each other, even with the slightest words or actions. These two always came in first, second, or third in every leg of the race. It was amazing that they were always able to complete the task, because if one fails, the other was able to quickly take over and finish the task. This team was competitive too, but in a friendly way. They would give other teams tips if they needed help. They teamed up other teams to vote Calvin Chen and Cica Zhou to be U-turned. Through sweat and pain, they never faced a time penalty, but at the end they came in second place.
They were the youngest contestants on the show, with Guan Xiaotong being only 17 and Bai Jugang being 21. It felt like Bai Jugang was looking after a younger sister at times. I felt their elimination was because of the Speed Bump they had to do in Texas before they could proceed to the next task. Compared to the Speed Bumps that other teams had to do when they placed last, the maze was definitely the hardest. It could be seen that Bai Jugang was very caring towards Guan Xiaotong. After they were revived to rejoin the race, Bai Jugang was very grateful towards Wallace Zhong and Jackie Zhong, who had held the revival card to bring them back to the race. Their spirit and energy were admired by the other teams.
These two are strikingly tall models. When they stood next to Li Xiaopeng and Angel Li, I thought they were standing on something a whole foot taller. They lacked communication at times. The race was supposed to be a team effort, but it was obvious that one was the bossier one. They were very annoyed when they did not place first. After the first leg in NYC, they never placed first again. With that first placement, they won one Express Pass for themselves to skip a task and another Express Pass to give to another group to skip a task. They were the first group to be U-turned by Wallace and Jackie, and therefore had to use their Express Pass by the third leg. Although they felt rushed and stressed, they nevertheless did enjoy the trip.
Prior to the show, the two did not know each other. They only had one thing in common: the love of exercising. They lacked trust within each other. Calvin always wanted to make sure he was the one doing everything. Calvin did not trust Cica. If they were each to memorize half of what was required, Calvin would always memorize everything, just in case, delaying time. And Cica seemed like she always wanted things to go her way. The one time they compromised on Cica’s decision to snow sledding rather than racing cars in Dubai, Cica ended up regretting that decision. If it wasn’t for Calvin, they would have spent an enormous amount of time there. Calvin always walked ahead of her, never thinking to wait for her. It wasn’t until the leg where they were eliminated that he finally trusted her. Cica admitted that although Calvin did not seem to trust her at the beginning, she was happy that he finally did and the two became friends at the conclusion of the show.
I started watching because of these two! Their long lasting friendship is displayed in the show. One twitch or one wink, the other will know what the person is thinking of. They did not need to speak, but only a gesture or two to communicate. It was obvious that Ekin was the more athletic one and therefore took on the harder tasks at times. Although Ekin was seen as the one in charge, Ekin was also very easygoing, as he would agree on whatever Jordan said. Whenever they read the challenge, they would not argue over what they should do and who should do it. Their methods of communicating are things friends should look onto as examples to maintain a friendship. This team lost because they refused to eat live squids in South Korea, which led to an hour of penalty. But, they had fun and enjoyed the overall trip and learned more about each other.
This father and daughter duo not only had an age gap, but also a language barrier. Being that Isabella grew up in England, she did not understand Mandarin, so she had to rely on her father for translations sometimes. The renowned actor Zhang Tielin also revealed that he had lost a lot of quality time with his daughter through the years as they lived in different parts of the world. However, this group was the most heartwarming because they cared for each other a lot. At many parts in the show, Zhang Tielin lacked the physical ability to complete the tasks, so his daughter would participate whenever necessary so their team could proceed forward. At the last challenge in Abu Dhabi, Zhang Tielin stopped Isabella from competing any further after she injured in knee in the first rafting round. Although Isabella was reluctant, she could not argue against her dad. They did not make it to the end, but they spent quality time with one another and created adventurous memories with each other.
They had a disadvantage in a sense, because they were both females, and no matter how tough the situation was, one ought to stand up and do it because they had no other choice. In an interview, they stated that originally, Cherie would take the height challenges and Liu Yun would take the food challenges. But, their plans changed when they had to keep up with what was expected. Liu Yun also stated that Cherie is like a mother to her, always looking after her. However, it was also obvious that at times, Cherie overreacted to things. Cherie unknowingly scolded Liu Yun on the New York City leg when they had to deliver pizza and there was something wrong with the address. The two also had a hard time in Texas with the barrels of hay because it required a lot of strength to push them. This ultimately led to their elimination, but the two besties accomplished something they had never before: traveling together.
