Never Dance Alone opens up to 28 years ago, five friends helping their sixth friend deliver Lorelei in a dance studio. What happens in between, we do not know yet. Skip forward 28 years later, the group of friends, members of M Club, have disbanded and each woman is leading her own life. What brings them back together is their passion and love for friendship and aerobic dancing.
Cyndi Law 羅鳳仙 (Annice Wu)In the 1980s, Cyndi holds the passion for aerobic dancing, often inviting her friends over to practice and hang out in her mother’s dance studio. She idolizes Alan Tam. She is her father’s illegitimate daughter, so she is often bullied by her older half-brother.
Mo Siu Sze 巫小詩 (Anjaylia Chan)In the 1980s, Siu Sze was perhaps the luckiest of all her fellow M Club members. She is the only one with the complete, loving, and caring family. She dreams of becoming a writer, and is friendliest with Cyndi and Julie. Although she tries to help Julie on numerous occasions, at the end, it always end up to become a misunderstanding. She tries to pair up Julie with Alan, although Siu Sze has a crush on Alan as well. At the end, Julie dates Robert and Siu Sze is able to date Alan, but because Alan immigrates, and Diana never gives the letter to Siu Sze, she and Alan ends their short courtship.
Julie Chu 朱莉 (Venus Wong)In the 1980s, Julie comes to Hong Kong from China to depend on her abusive aunt. She quickly becomes friends with Cyndi and Siu Sze, and then the rest of M Club. She does not have a happy family, but lucky enough to have a group of good female friends from M Club. Because of her, Diana sees her as an enemy and leaves the members of M Club. She dreams of love. At first, she has a crush on Alan, but soon she begins dating Robert, a photographer. She learns that she is pregnant after Robert leaves Hong Kong. Julie is left to give birth to their daughter, but because everyone else in M Club speak of their dreams, she knows the only way for her to survive would be to ‘lose’ her daughter. She tragically abandons her daughter, Lorelei at the orphanage, blames her M Club friends for losing her daughter and then breaks all ties with her friends.
Siu Zi Zha 陸婉秋 (Cheronna Ng)In the 1980s, Siu Zi Zha is the talkative and nosiest out of all the M Club members. This is because her family are all government officials and she is unable to speak much at home. She often tells her friends what she finds out and is like a chatterbox. She is responsible for telling Robert that Julie wants to change him and therefore Robert leaves Hong Kong without knowing that Julie is pregnant with his daughter.
Akina Leung 梁金燕 (Kandy Wong)In the 1980s, Akina is often laughed at by her friends for her size. She is short and a bit chubby, loves to eat and is very careless. But, at the end, her friends still care about her a lot. She only dreams to start a happy family with someone she loves and to have kids.
Jenny Hui 許珍妮 (Winki Lai)In the 1980s, Jenny’s mother sings at a nightclub, so she knows everything from puberty, to boys, to relationships. Her mother was supposed to marry Benny, a Filipino bandmate, but because Jenny did not want to go to the Philippines, her mother calls off the marriage. She dreams to be a flight attendant, to travel around the world and explore.
Diana Yung 容丹丹 (Jeannie Chan)In the 1980s, Diana is the class president, coming from a wealthy family. She is also the smartest out of all the girls. Before Julie shows up, she and the other M Club members were great friends. But, because she picks on Julie, the others start to ignore her and later stop being friends with her. She is very competitive. She knows Alan is leaving and is supposed to give Alan’s letter to Siu Sze, but because she also has a crush on Alan, she never gives it to Siu Sze, and instead follows Alan to Canada to continue her studies.
Cyndi Law 羅鳳仙 (Elvina Kong)In 2013, Cyndi has mental problems. She is unmarried because her older half-brother and her ex-boyfriend schemed her money, so all she has left is her dance studio. It is because of her that M Club comes together once again to take care of her dance studio while she is in the mental hospital recovering.
Mo Siu Sze 巫小詩 (Carman Lee)In 2013, Siu Sze is now happily married. Her daughter is not always obedient, but they later come to understand each other. Her mother-in-law treats her like a servant, but they also come to understand each other after the sudden death of her husband. She invests time and money to take care of Cyndi’s dance studio after Cyndi is admitted to the mental hospital, because she feels the friendship of M Club is valuable and priceless.
Julie Chu 朱莉 (Loletta Lee)In 2013, Julie tries to marry a rich man, but fails to do so because he turns out to be gay. She is ambitious for money because she suffered and lived in harsh conditions in her younger years. She runs into all the members of M Club again, forcing her to remember her past teenage years. Robert comes back and finds out that she had given birth to their daughter 28 years ago, but finds out that their daughter has gone missing. Julie is scarred by the fact that Lorelei, her daughter was not kidnapped, but in fact placed in front of the orphanage front steps by her. By the end, she comes to realize and admit her past wrongdoings, and to value what friendship and family really are.
Siu Zi Zha 陸婉秋 (Fennie Yuen)In 2013, Siu Zi Zha is no longer a chatterbox. She takes on a governmental position, but speaks only if she absolutely has to. The once cheerful and talkative Siu Zi Zha has become a dark and troubled Siu Zi Zha. This is because she thinks she let out the secret of Julie giving birth in the dance studio, and thus contributed to the kidnapping of Lorelei. From that point on, she decided to keep her mouth shut. She married and has two sons, but instead of informing her husband of the economic breakdown, she watched him put all his assets into the market and then watched him lose all of it. They ended up in a terrible divorce and she started to be a third party in the marriage of a higher government official and his wife. This causes her to suffer from depression, but after meeting up with her M Club friends, the lively and cheerful Siu Zi Zha comes back.
Akina Leung 梁金燕 (Gloria Yip)In 2013, Akina is married and lives life as a real estate agent. However, love no longer exists in her marriage, although she longs for love and affection from her husband. She feels ironic to help her husband trick Cyndi into selling the dance studio. At the end, she remembers their priceless friendship and stands against her husband. They file for divorce and she finds Dr. House, Cyndi’s doctor, someone who finally loves her for who she is.
Jenny Hui 許珍妮 (Angie Cheong)In 2013, Jenny is no longer a flight attendant, but a servant who cares for her mother 24/7 after her mother suffers from a stroke. Her mother is picky, so it is impossible for her to hire a caretaker. It is also impossible for her to date someone because she absolutely has no time. At the beginning, she dresses very casually, almost like a housewife, with no makeup. After meeting with her M Club members, she learns to take care of herself and finds love in a younger man.
Diana Yung 容丹丹 (Flora Chan)In 2013, Diana is the CEO of D Fitness and is divorced from Alan. She continues to be competitive. She gets jealous when M Club reunites and tries everything possible to take revenge at them. She continues to order Alan around, but this is only because she still loves him. By the end, she comes to realize competition and winning is not all that life is about. She learns to cherish love when Alan accepts her again and to cherish friendship when the M Club members are willing to call her as a friend again.
