It was the second night at the hotel in China. Flipping through channels, I found the airing of Ka Khong Khoon. It looked interesting. They spoke in Mandarin and I even thought it was a Mainland China drama. But as I watched more, I realized it was a Thai drama, just Mandarin dubbed. It was airing on China’s Anhui channel.
Ka Khong Khoon starts off with Gluay (Noon Woranuch Wongsawan) doing the traditional Thai dance. She has a friend Peemarn (Nam Rapeepat Eakpankul), who comes from a wealthy family. Peemarn likes Gluay, but Gluay only sees him as a friend, nothing more. Peemarn goes as far as to telling his mom about this girl who he wants to marry. Seeing that Gluay comes from a family whose status is not equal to theirs, she seeks help from her stepson Luck (Pong Nawat Kulrattanarak). Little did she know, Peemarn also went to seek help from his older brother, Luck to help persuade his mom. Luck goes to find Gluay and gives her some money to tell her to stay away from his half-brother. Gluay angrily throws the money back at him and slaps him, saying she is only friends with Peemarn and not everything is about money. This shocks Luck as all the women he had known in the past was after his money.
A little while later, it is revealed that Gluay’s older brother Gai (R the Star Anatpol Sirichoomsang) owes a large sum of debt. He is chased after by the loan shark. He has no choice but to tell Gluay. The siblings duo have a childhood friend, Jed (Oh Anuchit Sapunpohng), who is a lawyer. Jed sees Gai as a brother and secretly adores Gluay, although she only sees him as a brother. With the debt her brother owes, Gluay has no choice but to turn to Luck’s new offer.
Peemarn’s mother wants him to marry Natta (Fang Pitchaya Chaowalit) who has about equivalent status as their family. Peemarn doesn’t agree because he likes Gluay of course. But Luck blackmails Peemarn saying if he doesn’t, he will expose his secret. Luck’s new trick for Peemarn to give up on Gluay is for Gluay to marry Luck and in return he will help pay off all her brother’s debt. Gluay unwillingly accepts the offer.
Peemarn is devastated when he finds out his new sister-in-law is Gluay. He always tries to find evidence to show that Luck and Gluay are in a fake marriage. Luck promises Gluay that as soon as Peemarn agrees to marry Natta, she is free to go. Luck still believes that Gluay is only a woman hungry for money. Luck’s “girlfriend” Janejira (Ice Apissada Kreurkongka) and her sidekick Joy (Jieb Chompoonuch Piyatumchai) are always trying to cause trouble to Gluay. Janejira is just another woman who wants Luck for his wealth. However, Luck and Janejira have remained quite close through the years.
Peemarn’s mother does not see highly of Gluay either, always reminding Luck not to fall in love with her. While choosing the outfits for Peemarn and Natta’s engagement at a boutique, Gluay once again reminds Luck that right after Peemarn’s wedding, she will be leaving him. Luck requests her to not say that again, as they do not have much time left. He asks to take pictures with her to be as memories. While she isn’t looking, he secretly plants a kiss on her cheeks, causing her to be embarrassed.
Both Gluay and Luck gradually fall for each other as time passes by. As they were going to go to dinner one night, Gluay is reminded by Peemarn’s mother that she is only an actress, paid to be Luck’s wife so Peemarn would agree to marry Natta. At another dinner, with just Gluay and Luck, they watch as a traditional Thai dancer perform. Gluay clearly states that she is just like the performer, performing to earn money. Luck chases out to the performer and pays for some of her flowers. Returning to their table, he carefully puts the flower on Gluay’s hair. The two go home happily.
Gai and Jed do not see highly of Gluay’s “husband”. When Gluay is about to leave Luck, Luck brings back a young girl, Margie (Charlotte), who Luck claims to be his daughter with another woman while he was studying overseas. But, she is actually Peemarn’s daughter, the secret that Luck was bribing him with. Luck asks Gluay to stay until Margie gets used to life in Thailand. Peemarn is shocked with his brother’s decision as he has not taken care of his daughter all along. Peemarn thought Gluay would be mad at Luck. However, Gluay willingly takes care of Margie. Margie, who previously disliked Gluay, thinking she was stealing her father away, gradually starts to call Gluay mother. Luck, Gluay, and Margie live together as father, mother, and daughter for a while. Luck and Gluay grow closer after a visit to Gluay’s grandmother’s home in the suburban area, where they resolve their conflicts and start to appreciate one another.
Things change when Luck promises Gluay he will never lie to her again. Yet, he hides the fact that he was seeing Janejira that day. However, he was just seeing her to tell her that they will never see each other again. Luck and Gluay face misunderstandings one after another. When Margie is diagnosed with a fatal disease, Luck begs Gluay to come back to take care of Margie during her last days. Gluay agrees, but she and Luck are still not on good terms.
At Margie’s funeral, her mother comes back and the secret is exposed that Peemarn is actually her biological father. Everyone at the funeral is equally shocked. Peemarn explains to his mother later that he is sorry for disappointing her. Natta’s parents, seeing the dishonor to the family that Peemarn has caused no longer wishes their daughter to marry him.
Luck does not say anything to persuade Gluay to stay. She leaves, although both know that the other has left an important mark in their lives. Gluay realizes she is pregnant and tries to hide it from her grandmother, Gai, Jed, and especially Luck. However, when Kai does find out, he goes to take revenge on Luck. Worried, Gluay tries to stop him after she notices him bringing a gun out with him. Gluay tries to tell Gai not to shoot and at the same time trying to block Luck from Gai. Gai accidentally shoots Luck in the stomach in the madness of confusion. He is rushed to the hospital. After he wakes up, he only remembers Gai yelling at him for ruining Gluay’s life. He is severely confused.
Luck tells Peemarn to help him investigate what Gai meant. At the police station, Janejira overhears Gai telling Jed that Gluay is pregnant. Janejira is determined to make Gluay suffer a miscarriage. She steals Luck’s phone at the hospital and sends Gluay a text telling her to meet at a place. Janejira wanted Joy to help her, but at the end, Joy backs out, fearing the consequences if caught. Gluay goes and finds Janejira with a electric static shocker to attack her. Peemarn watches the entire commotion. Jenjira also accidentally pushes Gluay down the stairs. Gluay is sent to the hospital where Luck once again sees his love. After Luck finds out that Gluay is pregnant with his child, he is sorry for all that he has done and wants to make it up to her and win her heart back.
But, at this point, Gluay had already promised Jed that she would marry him. Peemarn tells Luck about Janejira and while she is filming a music video, she immediately gets scared when reporters come to the scene. Then Luck and Peemarn brings police over to catch her. It turns out Joy is the one who told the police where the evidence, the phone and the electric static shocker were located.
After Janejira is caught, it is shown that Gluay is back to the suburbs and Luck, at one point buys a car full of clothes and toys for the baby. It is then when he finds out that Gluay will marry Jed. Although Gluay is reluctant to marry Jed, she feels bad for backing out as he has done so much for her, her brother, and her grandmother. Gluay tries on her wedding dress in the same boutique where she and Luck went before. It brings back memories. When they are about to purchase a home for their marriage, an agent approaches them telling they are the 1000th customer and therefore gets a discount. However, this is actually just another way of getting them to accept Luck’s money.
When Jed finds out, he goes to find Luck and yells at him. He tells Luck that not everything is about money and tears the check in his face. At around the same time, Peemarn writes a letter to Natta asking for her forgiveness. They meet and Natta forgives him for all his lies and they officially become a couple. The two return hand in hand to meet Peemarn’s mother and tell her they would like to see Luck and Gluay have a happy ending as well. Luck is actually all packed and ready to head to America for a break when he receives a call from Jed.
On the day of Jed and Gluay’s marriage, Jed has a conversation with Gluay, asking her if she loves him. She doesn’t give him a direct answer, but instead tells him that she will try her best to be a good wife afterwards. Jed tells her he knows she doesn’t love him and is only marrying him because she had made the promise in the first place. Jed calls Luck to come out and he leaves the two. Luck finally tells Gluay he is sorry for all he has done to her, asking her for forgiveness. And he finally says he loves her for the first time. He asks if she loves him back and she answers yes. Then he asks her to marry her once again. The marriage ceremony goes well, except just with a different groom from the original groom.
Luck and Gluay receive blessings from the elders and return to Luck’s residence. Their servants are extremely happy for them. Luck and Gluay are officially married, this time Luck saying he can actually hand her his heart.
This was my first series and I really liked it! Although it was a bit draggy towards the end, it was nevertheless a good series as I never watched a series with a similar background story before. Highly recommended!
